February is For Friendship

February is all about love, but it is also about genuine friendships – especially those that have developed naturally through Woman to Woman Mentoring programs. In this blog post, we will take a second look at some of the connections made through W2WM and the impacts these connections have made on our program participants.

We know better than anyone that when women come together as a mentee and mentor pair, a bond is formed. One thing that is even more beautiful to see is a relationship that forms between women who weren’t even paired together. We asked our alumnae about friendships that have developed with women they met during programs or events, and they delivered amazing stories of deep connection and friendship!

Maria, a 2017 CORE Participant, relived her cohort days and reflected on the many connections she made during her time with W2WM, and the evolution of true friendships.

“I first met Lusmerlin in the CORE program. I usually sat behind her. She was so friendly, open, and smart. We struck up a conversation and things just hit it off. I met Miranda when we were working on vision boards, I had a picture of bacon all over my board. I can’t remember what she said, but at the end of our convo, we were both laughing. I got to know Amina more during our alumni [events]. We’ve hung out a few times, and she was essential as she was the main person who created events and always had intriguing conversations.”

Maria is still connected with this group of friends and even attended fellow program alumna Samantha’s wedding! The power of connection and putting yourself out there is a guaranteed way to gain a friend! When asked what advice Maria would give to someone looking to start with Woman to Woman Mentoring, she said, “Stop thinking about it. Just Do It. I remember others would say “you should join” and I blew it, and it took me feeling for a desperate need for change or support that I finally joined it was truly life-changing.”

Jenna, another CORE Mentoring Program participant spoke about her experience with Woman to Woman Mentoring and the friendships she made as a result. She and her W2WM bestie, Bee, met in their CORE class. They gravitated towards each other during the program, but their bond grew stronger at the close of the cohort. “She [Bee] has become one of my best friends. We love to craft together, and we’ve had fun attending trivia nights and bingo. She was one of my biggest cheerleaders during a difficult pregnancy, and I got to celebrate her at her wedding. You know those friends you read about in books and think would be so wonderful to have? That’s Bee.” Jenna stated.

We love hearing these heartfelt stories and about the connections that our programs facilitate. It’s easy to tell stories about a program that is so valuable to everyone involved and share the impact in the community! When we asked Jenna what advice she would give anyone looking for connection and community, she said, “Take a chance! I would go far as to say I can guarantee you will connect with someone.”

This is your call to take a chance and get involved. We are here to provide connection, support, and guidance to all women in Frederick and are always here as a resource and safe space to meet new people and belong to a network of strong, like-minded women.
